I mentioned last week that I went to a photography event with the Portland Bloggers. The Portland Bloggers are a group committed to connecting bloggers in the Portland area and helping them to forge relationships that lead to better blogging. Strike A Pose was an event to help bloggers with posing and styling, hair and makeup, and have photographs taken be professional photographers. I went in with little idea what to expect. I had never had real advice on any of these topics, and had never had my photograph taken by a professional. But my experience at ALT taught me that bloggers are some of the kindest and welcoming folks out there. So I went in with a smile on my face ready to start conversations with strangers and make some new friends.
At the event we were broken up into small groups of about six people including the photographer and a stylist. My photographer was the lovely Linnea of Linnea Paulina Photography. We began with a short discussion sharing idea about how best to pose for the camera. Easy tips:
- Angle your body 45 degrees away from the camera
- Keep your weight on your back leg
- Angle your front shoulder up and hold your arm slightly away from your body
- Smile with your eyes
- Don't be afraid to flirt with the camera
I get very shy when I have my picture taken. When I get shy end up making what I call baby face: big eyes, small mouth, puffy cheeks. To people who know me this can be endearing, but its not the face I want to put forward professionally. I told Linnea about this and she did a great job making me feel comfortable in front of the camera. In my current head shot I look normal and happy because I was joking with Nathan off camera. So she started asking me about our relationship, and I totally relaxed. Talking about Nathan makes me smile naturally and natural smiles look good on camera.
One of the most interesting things about they day was watching the other people in our group get photographed. Olga of Vintage Pretty, Megan of Boho Mama, and Spencer of 12oz. Beehouse were all in my group. They are all such lovely ladies and watching them work it for the camera really helped me. Suzannah of Adventures in Dressmaking was our stylist and she was very helpful both in making us look good, and making us laugh.
It was a really fun and informative day. I met some wonderful people I look forward to seeing again at the next Portland Bloggers event, and I have great new head shots.
