When Lara came to visit this weekend, she brought a bunch of fun vintage clip-ons she had collected and wanted to turn them into post earrings. I agreed to apply my crafty skills, and it was surprisingly easy to do. Tutorial follows...
You Will Need...
First Steps: Prepare Your Materials
1. Remove the clip-on parts of the earrings. We didn't use any pliers or anything, just kind of twisted them around til they snapped off.
2. Sand the backs of the earrings. I had 150 grit lying around so that's what we used. This is to smooth out any sharp bits left from removing the clip-ons, and to rough up the metal so the glue will adhere better.
3. Sand the flat end of the posts to rough them up as well.
Next Steps: Glue Them Together
4. Apply a tiny drop of glue to the post. Be careful not to get this on your hands, it's a pain to get off.
5. Gently apply to the flattest area of the back-side of the earring. Note: pushing harder will not make it stick better, a gentle pressure is all that's needed. Hold a few seconds.
6. Let sit a few minutes to be sure everything is really and truly dry. It's a pain to get this glue off your fingers, and a much bigger pain when it has attached an earring to your ear.
That's it, it's that easy. We did all these pairs in about 10 minutes. Here's a close-up of the cameos Lara gave me as a gift. Thanks Lara!

this is what I was looking for-converting clips to posts. the clips are too tight so I may give it a try.The earrings are sterling silver and somewhat heavy so should the post be positioned inthe upper half? thanks
ReplyDeleteYes! If they are larger and heavy, place the post toward the top. This will keep them from falling or tipping outward and putting pressure on your ear. Thanks for reading!
